Does Music Help ADHD? What the Research Actually Says

It found a small positive effect of white and pink noise on attention tasks for people with ADHD or elevated attention symptoms, and a small negative effect for people without ADHD.

Read that again. The same sound helped one group and mildly hurt the other. That is unusual in cognitive research, and it is the clearest signal we have that ADHD brains genuinely process background sound differently.

But the benefit is not universal within ADHD either. A 2024 Swedish study of 43 children and teens with clinically diagnosed ADHD found that participants with relatively more inattentive traits improved under white noise, while those with relatively more hyperactive and impulsive traits performed worse. Brown Noise

Brown noise went viral on social media as an ADHD hack.
