If you want to know how to focus better, start with a more forgiving idea about why it feels so hard. Your attention isn't weak. It's under constant assault. The average person's attention on any single screen has fallen from about 2.5 minutes two decades ago to around 47 seconds today, and every time it breaks, the cost of getting back is steep. You are not failing at focus. You are trying to concentrate inside an environment engineered to fragment it.
The good news: focus responds to the right conditions. Once you understand how attention actually works, you can stop relying on willpower and start building a setup that makes concentration the default. This guide covers what the science says and the practical steps that follow from it.
Attention is a limited resource, and every switch spends it. Research from Gloria Mark and colleagues at UC Irvine produced one of the most cited findings in the field: after an interruption, it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to return to the same depth of concentration on the original task. Not 23 seconds. Nearly half an hour, per interruption.
It gets worse when you notice how rarely we go straight back. Mark's observational work found that interrupted workers typically handle about two other tasks before returning to the original one, and each of those transitions leaves what psychologist Sophie Leroy named "attention residue": a piece of your mind stays stuck on the previous task even after you've moved on.
Two more forces make this harder. Multitasking is mostly a myth. What we call multitasking is rapid task-switching, and it can reduce effective productivity meaningfully while making work take longer. And a surprising share of interruptions are self-inflicted. Mark's research found that roughly half of interruptions are self-initiated, the reflexive phone check or the sudden urge to look something up. That matters, because it means managing other people's demands is only half the battle.
Willpower is unreliable and it drains as the day goes on. Environment is durable. The most effective way to improve focus is to make distraction harder to reach and deep work easier to start.
Small amounts of friction change behavior more than you'd expect. Even a few seconds of delay between you and a distraction reduces impulsive checking. Practical moves:
Put your phone in another room, not just face-down. Physical distance is the friction.
Turn off all non-essential notifications during focus blocks. Every banner is a potential 23-minute derailment.
Close the tabs and apps you aren't using. An empty desktop is a quieter mind.
Lower the friction for the work you want to do. Keep the document you're writing open and ready. Set out what you need before you start. Use a consistent cue, a specific spot, a drink, the same audio, so your brain learns that this combination means it's time to concentrate.
Your brain isn't built to concentrate indefinitely. Focus tends to hold well for roughly 20 to 45 minutes before it starts to fade, which is why structured work-and-break cycles help so much.
The Pomodoro method is the simplest version: pick one task, work for about 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break, and take a longer break after a few cycles. The point isn't the exact timing. It's committing to a single task per interval and building in recovery before fatigue sets in. As your focus strengthens, you can extend the work intervals.
A few rules make cycles far more effective:
One task per interval. No switching, even when you get the itch to check something.
Protect the block. Phone away, notifications off, door closed if you can.
Use breaks to actually recover. Step away from the screen, move, look at something far away. Doom-scrolling is not a break.
Sleep, movement, and hydration aren't productivity clichés. They're the foundation attention is built on. No technique compensates for chronic sleep loss, so treat consistent sleep as part of your focus strategy rather than something separate from it. A short walk between sessions restores attention more than another coffee. And single-tasking is a skill that strengthens with practice: each time your mind wanders and you gently bring it back, you're training the exact capacity you want to grow.
Most people reach for music to focus, and the instinct is right, but the usual choices work against them. Familiar songs, lyrics, and surprising transitions are all engineered to grab your attention. That's the opposite of what you want in the background while you concentrate, which is why streaming "focus playlists" often backfire.
